Assignment #1:
Read the following quote by Professor John Keating from the movie Dead Poets Society. What do you think it means? Why?
"We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”
In my opinion, professor John Keating meant poetry is a way of express ourselves and our feelings. It is not like the job we do just to earn money to sustain our live s, such as business, engineering, etc. These are certainly needed, but the interaction of human and feelings is what made human different from other species.
Assignment #2:
Read the following quote by Professor John Keating from the movie Dead Poets Society. What do you think it means? Explain.
"I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things a different way. The world looks very different up here . . . Just when you think you think you know something you have to look at it in another way . . . When you read, don’t just consider what the author thinks, you must consider what you think."
Always interpret things in different views. John Keating demonstrated it to the students by encouraged students to stand on his desk. He was trying to show how different things can be when you looked at it in another point of view. In my own experience, I know sometimes when my mom yells at me meant she is worried for me, instead of blaming me for doing stuff wrong.
